Rob Pool, MSFS, CFP, ChFC, CFS, Investment Manager
If you’re looking to bring clarity to the financial issues that most concern you, Rob Pool offers sound perspective for building long-term wealth. In contrast, many banks and brokerage firms focus on commission-based products, whether or not this is in their clients’ highest interests. Rob’s demeanor may be more sensible than sensational, but make no mistake: Rob’s commitment to helping everyday people manage their money is firmly grounded in a career that spans more than two decades, including advisory, supervisory and educational expertise within the investment management, financial planning and real estate industries.
While assisting a broad range of clients within Fortune 500 companies such as American Express and Charles Schwab, Rob became convinced that solid, objective advice and hands-on relationship-based service were the keys to helping investors define and achieve their unique financial goals. In 2002, to best offer this level of care, Rob joined a team of like-minded colleagues at Arcadia Investment Advisors, an independent Registered Investment Advisor firm where he served as partner, Chief Compliance Officer, and Investment Manager. In 2012, Rob formalized his ownership interest at Arcadia into what is now Fort Vancouver Investment Management, LLC.
Beyond serving clients, Rob also actively seeks to enhance financial literacy in his community. As a volunteer for the Foundation for Personal Financial Education, he has been invited to speak by a number of local businesses such as Cascade Corporation, Micron Technology, and Leatherman Tool Company; as well as other organizations including the Oregon Bar Association and the Veteran’s Administration.
Rob’s dedication to his craft also is evident in his exemplary education and credentials. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business management from George Fox University and holds a master’s degree in financial services from the Institute of Business and Finance. Rob is also a Certified Financial Planner® and a NAPFA Registered Financial Advisor.
On a personal note, Rob is husband to Valerie, and father to their children Kayla, Grace and Joshua. The Pools live in the foothills of the Cascade Range in Hockinson, Washington. Rob volunteers with County Wide Chaplaincy, a non-profit organization established to provide a chaplain at the scene of any traumatic injury or death within Clark County when requested by the emergency responders.
Matt Ebeling, Investment Manager
While it certainly didn't hurt that Matt joined FVIM with substantial investment experience, they knew they'd found the right fit based on his passion for making a difference in people' s lives. In 2016, Matt joined the team to help clients prudently plan for their financial future and implement sound investment strategies. He was attracted to the firm based on shared principles. "Serving as a fee-only advisor that champions the fiduciary standard, emphasizes a goal-based approach, and builds authentic relationships with dedicated client care is what drew me to the firm,” says Matt.
Matt has more than 15 years of experience in wealth management. He began his career with a local Vancouver community bank trust department, where he held multiple positions including securities specialist and portfolio manager. Most recently, Matt spent nine years working for a private Registered Investment Advisor firm that manages over $60 billion worldwide. There, he was an investment counselor for high-net-worth individuals and families across the U.S.
Matt earned his MBA from Liberty University, and a bachelor's degree in business management and marketing from Pensacola Christian College. He holds a Series 65 securities license.
On a personal note, Matt is married to Kim and has three children: Jewels, Myah and Chase. The Ebelings have called Vancouver home since 2001; they love exploring the many outdoor adventures the Pacific Northwest offers. They have also had the privilege to work with several refugee families from Myanmar through their church in Vancouver.
Holly Breeden, Portfolio Analyst & Chief
Holly and Rob have been working together serving clients since 2006. “What I love about Holly is her attention to detail and her dedication to excellence” says Rob. “When it comes to serving clients, her attentive nature, and caring spirit, and unwillingness to compromise on quality makes her an extremely valuable component of our firm.”
With her fondness for number-crunching, Holly was attracted to the Investment Management industry in 2006 by the chance to help clients with their investment analyses and financial plans. But she found that “the people factor” has been among the most satisfying parts of her role at Fort Vancouver, where she assists with portfolio reviews, trade placements, compliance obligations and additional client outreach services. In 2014, Holly completed the investment advisory exam.
“It’s such a pleasant place to work,” says Holly. “Everyone here is included in making the best choices for our clients, as well as building personal rapport with them and among each other.”
Holly’s background includes seven years as office manager at a Vancouver-based tax consulting firm, where she oversaw the company’s administrative staff, managed client accounts, and developed specialized expertise in submitting property tax appeals. The experience whetted her appetite to serve individuals’ financial needs more directly. Holly also studied legal assisting at Utah Valley State College.
Outside of the office, family is just as important to Holly. She enjoys spending time with her two children and husband Jerred, is involved in her church, and dabbles in various arts and craft projects in any spare time that remains.
Sarah Young, Operations Manager
Sarah relocated to Vancouver in 2004 from California. Rob and Sarah have served clients together ever since. “When we first began working together, I couldn’t help but notice her character, warm nature, and attentiveness.” Rob said of Sarah. “Not only is she extremely efficient, but also very accurate in her assessment of problems and their ultimate solutions.”
Sarah assists with client account processing, performance reporting software, technology development and a variety of special client projects. “I especially like the boutique, fee-only business model and friendly environment here,” says Sarah. “It means we all know that our clients’ best interests are the priority.” She also acts as our liaison to our custodian Charles Schwab & Co. She helps clients open accounts, tracks transfers of assets, processes distribution requests, ensures client needs are met timely and consistently.
Sarah has been on the administrative side of small business throughout most of her professional career. She feels that one of the main benefits of working in a small business environment is to work through a creative solution process that is at times difficult in a large corporation.
In her off hours Sarah spends time with her husband Matt and their daughter Emma. Together they enjoy traveling and experiencing new places. Sarah is also fond of arts and crafts projects as well as updating their 1950s home.
Madeline Koo, Client Service Specialist
Madeline knew she’d found a great fit for her career aspirations when she joined FVIM in 2018. “The fact that most of the team had been working together for 10+ years spoke volumes to me,” she says.
Fortunately, the feeling is mutual. When Madeline mentioned her guilty pleasures included “doing paperwork, working with numbers and organizing things,” we knew we’d found the right match for our growing firm. It was no time at all before we were wondering how we ever got by without her, from assisting with administrative details, to helping us with account maintenance, to pitching in on client care.
Madeline grew up in northern California, relocating to Washington in 2016. Before joining FVIM, she worked in the finance department for a pension administration company. She also served for a year as a volunteer educator in the Pohnpei, Micronesia school system. Madeline holds a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies and a master’s degree in teaching.
At home, Madeline and her husband enjoy spoiling their two cavalier King Charles spaniels, Ozzy and Olive. She also loves to travel, immersing herself in local cultures. So far, she’s visited 14 countries… and counting.
